Questions
- Do all files on the computer get deleted on a reboot?
Yes; we do this to ensure the machines work properly when rebooted.
- I'm a student, where do I save my files?
We recommend saving files to your UCSB U-Storage network storage
or USB Flash drives. We no longer recommend using zip disks or floppies as they are prone to failure before
papers are due. Many people email themselves their files.
- What is the MyStorage icon on the desktop?
This allows very easy access to your U-Storage and IC ClassStorage. Please see our MyStorage Instructions Page for more information.
- What is the GlobalShare icon on the desktop?
This is a network accessible disk that can be written to and from all of our labs. If you are an instructor,
you can instantly share files with your students. If you are a student, you could save temporary work here.
Files do get deleted from this space, so please read the information file in that folder before using.
- What is the Classes icon on the desktop?
These are folders that contain files which Instructors wish to have accessible to their students on a
continual basis. The Classes folder in the Mac labs is different than the Classes folder in the PC labs.
- I'm an instructor, can I bring my laptop?
Yes! At the instructor station, we have all the cables necessary for you to connect your laptop (power,
projector video, network). There is a red button that you can press to toggle video from the instructor
station to your laptop.
- I'm a student, can I bring in my laptop?
Both the Phelps and Kerr facilities now have Wireless Internet available to be used in our labs if you would
like. However, please do not attempt to plug in your laptop to our wall power sockets, or try to use our
wired ethernet connections.
- Can I print to the printers with my laptop?
At this time we do not support printing from the wireless internet in our labs to the printers. Please save
your file to your UCSB U-Storage network storage, USB Flash drive, etc. and transfer over to one our lab
machines if you need to print.
- I want to use a specific software title. What lab do I use?
First you need to find out what labs have that software. Then you need to find out
what lab is currently available for drop-in usage. This information is available from our daily schedule.
